Research

My research at Stanford University and the VA Palo Alto Health Care System explores the science and impact of yoga and meditation, with a focus on how breath-based practices influence emotional well-being, cognitive function, and stress resilience. Drawing on science, I examine how ancient techniques like pranayama and Sky Breath Meditation and Yoga can support modern mental health and enhance quality of life.

This randomized clinical non-inferiority trial compared the effectiveness of a breathing-based meditation intervention (SKY Breath Meditation) with Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), a gold-standard treatment for PTSD, in military veterans. The study aimed to determine whether the meditation-based approach was not significantly less effective than CPT in reducing symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder. Findings suggested that the breathing-based practice produced comparable improvements in PTSD symptoms, with fewer dropouts—highlighting its potential as a viable, scalable alternative for trauma-related care.

This randomized clinical trial tested a 10-week yoga program for Gulf War Illness (GWI) in 75 veterans. Compared to cognitive behavioral therapy, yoga led to greater reductions in pain severity, pain interference, and fatigue, with no serious side effects. While not all between-group differences were statistically significant, the combined pain outcomes favored yoga, suggesting it may be a safe and effective option for managing core GWI symptoms.

Breath-based meditation is increasingly supported by research as an effective tool for improving mental health. Studies show it can significantly reduce stress, depression, and trauma-related symptoms, especially in those who need it most. Rather than working only through the mind, breathwork helps regulate the nervous system and create real physiological shifts in the body. This is why such a simple practice—working with the breath—can lead to meaningful and lasting changes in how we feel.
